Zachariah and Lydia left VA. moving to Henry Co., KY a few years after Daniel Boone was leading the first families into the wilderness, about 1803. There they remained until late 1842 or early 1843 when they moved to Johnson Co., IL.

The move was started when Zachary was in his seventies and included building a primitive raft big enough to hold all the families possessions including livestock and provisions and floating from the area north of Louisville near Patton's Creek, down the Ohio River ans landing in the area of Bay Creek in southern Illinois a few miles down river from Golconda, IL.

Buck Cummins writes in more detail about what is known of the journey in his unfinished family history. It is worth noting here that the raft was fairly large being about 16 feet across and seventy to eighty feet long and carried at least 30 family members. All this accomplished when Zachary was 77 years of age.
