American Diplomat and Writer. He was a lawyer by trade, but did many things during his long life. He was the son of a Confederate officer Minor Meriwether and his wife a suffragette, Elizabeth Avery Meriwether. In 1880's, he published a newspaper "Meriwether's Weekly." After touring Europe, he wrote "How to See Europe on Fifty Cents a Day" in 1887; this followed with "A Lord's Courtship" in 1900; and "War Diary of a Diplomat" in 1919, which was related his experiences as a special assistant of the U.S. State Department in Paris during World War I. He was a prolific writer, who enjoyed adventure and often in the right place at the right time; he only worked as a lawyer for a short periods during his lifetime. Referred to as the American Methuselah, he rewrote his memoirs four times to keep them current. At the age of 103, he fell and fractured his hip then died a week later from a post-operative complication of a heart attack. He was married three times and out lived all three of his children.
