The V Corps was present at (but not engaged) during the Battle of Antietam on 17 Sep 1862.
At the time of the Battle of Fredericksburg, VA, the V Corps was commanded by BG Daniel Butterfield, the 3rd Division by BG Andrew A. Humphreys and the 2nd Brigade by Col. Peter H. Allabach (who was the Colonel of the 131st PA).
At Fredericksburg, on 13 Dec 1862, the V Corps, 3rd Division (Humphreys) assaulted Marye's Heights in mid-afternoon. The apex of the assault reached within 50 yards of the stone wall before being cut down.
As part of the V Corps, the 131st Pennsylvania (a 9 month regiment) also participated in the abortive "Mud March" and in the Battle of Chancellorsville, VA.
William mustered out with Company D on May 23, 1863.
Member, Col. Hulings Post 176, Dept. of Penna., Grand Army of the Republic (G.A.R.), Lewistown, Mifflin, PA.
William's brothers, Daniel J. Riegle, Samuel Riegel, Benjamin F. Riegel, and Jacob L. Reigle also served during the Civil War.
