Birth card for Barbara Fletcher lists her mother as Edna Fletcher with no father's name.

The family story about her adoption is unsupported, though there might be a probate record changing her surname from Fletcher to Clark. Nathan's obituary stated she was his step-daughter, which was one of the first hints at illegitimacy I uncovered. The 1900 Census showing Edna having three children all surviving in 1900 but only being married three years built a stronger case. Very recently, I uncovered Edna had two brothers who were illegitimate, so I honed in on the possibility Edna too having an illegitimate child, and I found the record to prove it.

Note regarding stone: There is conflicting data regarding the birth year of 1892 or 1893. The birth card supports 1893 but the marriage card supports 1892 as well as the Social Security Death Index.
