Auralie Lamoureux, was born in Montreal March 29, 1818. She was the daughter of Pierre Lamoureux and Angelique Stengell (also seen Stinguel).
Mrs. Peter Vance was reared by well-to-do parents in Quebec, Canada and her fine rearing carried through her life. It was a great assistance in the tough life of the Wilderness.
Her husband Peter Vance came in response to a call from his brother Levi to help him run his trading post in Wisconsin.
When Auralie was 95 years of age, she was interviewed in a newspaper article that appeared in the Dunn County News in July, 1913.
" We were told that money grew on bushes in this country, but I want to tell you that we had no fun until after the Chippewa's had left." The one big fact that stood out in her mind was the constant presence of the Indians and her constant fear of them. "Fear does not kill. If it did, I would have been dead long ago", she was often heard to say.
Auralie and her husband Peter Vance remained in Vanceburg for over thirty years and several of their children were married there. After peter died, Auralie continued to run the farm and "half-way house" with the help of her sons, Paul and David, until she moved to Minneapolis to live with a daughter and resided in Minneapolis for seven years where she married again to a Mr. Peter Wood. She called herself "Mrs Dubois", which is Wood in French. When Peter Wood died, Auralie moved to Tomahawk and lived with her daughter Alice Vance Hickey.
Auralie paid a return visit to Montreal when in her 80's to visit her remaining family, sisters Leocadie Lamoureux Miron (Mrs. Cyrille) and Marie Adeline Berenisse Lamoureux Clement (Mrs. Felix). The three had a portrait taken by O. F. Desjardins, photographer, 1509 rue St-Catherine, Montreal, Quebec, probably between 1898-1908. She lived to be 103 and is buried in Tomahawk, Wisconsin.
