Son of Ellis S. Ragsdale & Zelpha Smith; grandson of Britton Ragsdale. It is believed that Eda Jeffery married Britton Ragsdale and is either the step-mother or sister-in-law to Ellis S. Ragsdale & Britton J. Ragsdale. After Britton's death, she married John Milligan II of Triadelphia, (West) Virginia. Ellis Ragsdale & John Milligan had such a strong friendship that both would name their fourth child (sons) after each other, John Milligan Ragsdale and Ellis Ragsdale Milligan.

Note from David Hill, Louisiana Division Commander, Sons of Confederate Veterans: "Found John Ragsdale on the Confederate Roster with this spelling:
Ragsdill, John M. TX 31st Cav. Co. D Pvt.

"Judging from the date of death, April 8, 1864, John Ragsdale was most likely killed at the Battle of Mansfield, the majority of the battle casualties buried at Mansfield Cemetery do not have headstones. They are buried in unmarked graves in the same plot."
