George Rom Hardesty graduated with a degree in electrical engineering from NC State University. Before WWI he was the head facilities engineer at Cherry Hospital in Goldsboro, NC. During WWI he was assigned to the 92nd Division as its gas officer, in charge of instructing soldiers in the use of and defense against chemical weapons.
