DIED.
MERRIAM-At his home in this city, Sunday, Nov. 15th, 1896, about 4 o'clock a.m., Francis Harrison Merriam, aged 61 years, 10 months and 21 days.
Francis Harrison Merriam was born at Grafton, Mass., Dec. 24th, 1834, and came to Iowa in 1868, settling in Tipton, where he has since resided. He was married to Anna J. Chew, Feb. 10th, 1870. Three children were born to them, two sons and a daughter, who, with their mother, still survive him.
Mr. Merriam enlisted in the service of his country, July 31st. 1861, as a private in Co. A, 14th U.S. Infantry. Discharged as lieutenant of the same Company .Re-enlisted and finally discharged on Feb. 27th, 1867. Among other engagements, he was in the battle of the Wilderness and Second Bull Run, where he was wounded. He was for a number of years a member of Wm. Beaver Post, G.A.R., and was serving his second term as adjutant at the time of his death.
Funeral services were held at the Presbyterian church, Tuesday morning at 10 o'clock, conducted by Rev. W. W. Johnson. The funeral was in charge of William Beaver Post, G.A.R., and the interment was at the Masonic cemetery. The funeral was quite largely attended. The community extends consolation to the bereaved ones at this sad time.
