Charles was the 4th of seven children born to Asmus Hinrich Jensen and Helena (Molzen) Jensen, both of the Flensburg area in Schleswig-Holstein which was then Denmark but is now part of Germany.

The first two children born to Asmus and Helena died as infants and the third child died at 9 years old. Charles and his sister Catherine were the only siblings who lived to adulthood.

The family spent the first years after immigrating in Ohio and Indiana. They then lived on a farm near Newton, Kansas but eventually moved to town where Charles' father opened a successful shoe shop in a building which still stands. The family lived in a large house behind the shop.

Charles was an artist and house painter. He married Louise "Lula" Lynn and they raised five children: Fern, Helen, Jack, Lynn and Lois. Much of the extended family moved to Santa Monica to get away from the cold Kansas winters. Charles and Lula are buried next to each other in Woodlawn Cemetery.
