U.S. Senator. He served in the United States Senate from December 1968 to January 2009 as a senator from the state of Alaska. Born in Indianapolis, Indiana, and educated at the University of California, Los Angeles (UCLA) and Harvard Law School, he served in China and Burma during World War II (WWII) as a member of the U.S. Army Air Corps. He was admitted to the California Bar Association in 1950, the District of Columbia Bar Association in 1951 and the Alaska Bar Association in 1957. He joined the Department of the Interior during the mid-1950s, serving as a legislative counsel, assistant to the Secretary of the Interior, and chief counsel. He fought for Alaskan statehood, gaining the nickname "Mr. Alaska." From 1964 to 1968, he served in the Alaska State House of Representatives, where he served as speaker pro tempore and House majority leader. He was appointed to the U.S. Senate on December 24, 1968 following the death of Senator Edward L. Bartlett 13 days prior. As a member of the U.S. Senate, he served as chair of the Republican Senatorial Campaign Committee, the Select Committee on Ethics, the Committee on Rules and Administration, the Committee on Governmental Affairs, the Senate Appropriations Committee and the Committee on Commerce, Science and Transportation. He was indicted and convicted on charges of making false statements on federal financial forms by a federal grand jury. His conviction was subsequently overturned by a federal judge over charges of prosecutor misconduct. He was killed in a fatal plane crash along with five other passengers, including former NASA administrator Sean O'Keefe near Dillingham, Alaska. Ted Stevens Anchorage International Airport is named after him.
