BURLINGTON FLATS John P. Henderson, 80, of Burlington Flats died Thursday, Oct. 13, 2005, at MIB Hospital.

He was born March 31, 1925, in Youngstown, Ohio, the son of James P. and Olive (Fleming) Henderson.

He married Ann L. Smalley in Virginia. She predeceased him Jan. 6, 2001.

John retired from the United State Postal Service. He loved working as a clerk at the post office window where he could visit with everyone who came in that day.

John served in the United States Army as a Medical Technician during World War II. He was awarded the Purple Heart, Bronze Star and Silver Star; and participated in the Battle of Normandy.

John enjoyed watching the Braves play baseball, old movies and sitting with company. He was comfortable with silence and his cat. One of his greater talents was storytelling, a trait that the family hopes to be passed down to future generations.

His children and their spouses, Donna Jean and John Snyder, Joann Patricia Childers, LouAnn Sally Matthews, Jay and Theresa Henderson and James and Mary Ann Henderson; and a plethora of grandchildren, great-grandchildren, great-great-grandchildren and great-great-great-grandchildren, survive John.

He was ever so proud to be a great-great-great-grandfather.
His three brothers, and wife, Ann, predeceased John.

Funeral services will be at 2 p.m. Sunday, Oct. 16, 2005, at the Burlington Flats Baptist Church, with Pastor Jay Henderson officiating. A dinner will follow the service at the church annex.

Calling hours are from 4 to 7 p.m. Saturday, Oct. 15, 2005, at the Houk-Johnston-Terry Funeral Home, Edmeston.

Contributions may be made in John's memory to the Catskill Area Hospice; envelopes will be available at the funeral home and at the church.
