William, having gone missing on the above date, was not officially declared as being dead by the military until January 14, 1946.

William served as a Second Lieutenant and Navigator on B-17E "Craps For The Japs" (#41-2653), 65th Bomber Squadron, 43rd Bomber Group, Heavy, U.S. Army Air Force during World War II.

He resided in Union County, New Jersey prior to the war.

He enlisted in the Army Air Corps on January 17, 1942 in New York City, New York. He was noted as being employed as a Office Clerk and also as being Single, without dependents.

William was declared "Missing In Action" when his B-17 did not return on a bombing mission to Cape Gloucester Airfield (Tuluvu) during the war. A group of twelve B-17 were on this mission and they were intercepted by Japanese Fighters and it is believed that his B-17 was shot down by them and crashed into the sea. He and was awarded an Air Medal and a Purple Heart.
