He resided in Portsmouth, Rockingham County, New Hampshire prior to the war.
U.S.S. Allen M. Sumner was in the Lingayen Gulf to support minesweeping operations. At about noon they came under attack by Japanese kamikazes. One of the kamikazes crashed into the Sumner near the after stack and after torpedo mount.
The Sumner lost 14 men Killed or Missing In Action and 19 injured of which two later died of their wounds.
Paul was one of the 19 injured and "Died Of His Wounds" 3 days later as a result of this attack during the war.
He was awarded the Purple Heart.
Paul was buried at sea.
