Son of John A. Hoys who resided in Jersey City, New Jersey.

Andrew served as a Torpedoman's Mate Third Class, U.S.S. Allen M. Sumner (DD-692), U.S. Navy during World War II.

He resided in New Jersey prior to the war.

He enlisted in the Navy on February 17, 1943 in New York City, New York.

The U.S.S. Allen M. Sumner was in the Lingayen Gulf to support minesweeping operations. At about noon they came under attack by Japanese kamikazes. One of the kamikazes crashed into the Sumner near the after stack and after torpedo mount.

The Sumner lost 14 men Killed or Missing In Action and 19 injured of which two later died of their wounds.

Andrew was one of the 14 crewman "Killed In Action" in this attack during the war.

He was awarded the Purple Heart.

Andrew was buried at sea.
