Joseph served as a Second Lieutenant & Pilot on B-24D "Yanks From Hell" #41-23716, 321st Bomber Squadron, 90th Bomber Group, Heavy, U.S. Army Air Force during World War II.
He resided in Essex County, New Jersey and was a member of the New Jersey National Guard prior to the war.
His National Guard unit was called into full time active Army service on September 16, 1940, prior to the war, from Newark, New Jersey. He was noted, at that time, as being employed as a Salesperson and also as Single, without dependents.
Joseph was married sometime after he went into full time active service.
B-24D #41-23716 took off, with 23 other B-24's, from 5-Mile Drome (Wards - APO #713) near Port Moresby on a night bombing mission over Boram Airfield near Wewak, Papua New Guinea. They were hit & shot down by "intense" ground anti-aircraft fire and crashed at Cape Boram.
Joseph was declared "Missing In Action" in this crash during the war.
He was awarded the Air Medal and the Purple Heart.
