In 1930, Lubbuck County, Texas; GD was enumerated with his parents Franklin O. & Dora B. Ashton; and siblings: Lola B., Franklin O. Jr., and Estelle D. Ashton (1930 Census).

In 1940, Artesia, New Mexico; GD was enumerated with his parents F.O. Sr. & Dora Ashton; and siblings: F. O., Estelle, and Maxine Ashton (1040 Census).

On 28 Sep 1940, G.D. Ashton (B: 1916, Texas) was a resident of Eddy County, New Mexico. He enlisted as a Private at Fort MacArthur, San Pedro, California. He was described as: single, 5 feet 8 inches, 152 pounds (WWII Enlistments).

PFC G.D. Ashton served with the 33rd Quartermaster Regiment at Fort Bonifacio, Manila, Philippines until he became a POW. He was killed when he was aboard the Imperial Japanese "Hell Ship" Shinyo Maru and it was torpedoed by the American Submarine USS Paddle. Those prisoners not killed by the torpedo, were executed by their guards or left to drown. Hell ships were unmarked as POW carriers (POW Rolls).
