Howard served as a Private First Class, 5307th Composite Unit, U.S. Army during World War II.
He resided in Blount County, Tennessee prior to the war.
He enlisted in the Army on October 14, 1942 at Fort Oglethorpe, Georgia. He was noted, at the time of his enlistment, as being Married.
Howard was serving as part of the Drop Crew on C-47 #41-38709, 2nd Troop Carrier Squadron, U.S. Army Air Force.
C-47 #41-38709 took off, with a crew of 3 and a drop crew of 4, from Dinjan, India on a Cargo Drop Mission over Myitkyina, Burma (Myanmar).
They crashed due to bad weather in the remote mountains of Burma. The crash site was discovered in 1987 and some of the remains were recovered at that time. It is unsure whose remains were and were not recovered.
Howard was declared "Missing In Action" in this crash during the war.
He was awarded the Purple Heart.
