He enlisted in the Army on February 2, 1943 at Fort Jackson, Columbia, South Carolina. He was noted, at the time of his enlistment, as being employed as an Apprentice in a trade and also as Single, without dependents.
B-24J #44-40684 took off, with a crew of 10 and other B-24's, from Angaur Island, Palau for a bombing strike over Clark Field, Luzon Island, Philippines.
They were hit by ground anti-aircraft fire between the No. 2 and No. 3 engines which caused their right wing to come off and the entire B-24 caught fire, exploded, and crashed. One parachute was observed by others leaving the plane. It is believed that it was Maj. Rowe's as only his remains were found from the entire crew.
Lucius was declared "Missing In Action" in this crash during the war.
He was awarded the Air Medal with 1 Oak Leaf Clusterand the Purple Heart.
