USS Canopus Submarine tender Sqdn 20
Service #2720497
Awards: Purple Heart, Prisoner of War Medal

Mission Date: 7-Sep-44

Cause: Friendly fire, killed by Japanese guards or drowning.

The submarine tender USS Canopus (AS-9) received severe damage when hit by heavy bombers on December 29, 1941. She lost six of her crew in the attack, with another six wounded. A large number of her crew died in the Philippine Islands, during transport to POW camps in Japan, or in the camps themselves.

Shinyo Maru was a Japanese cargo steamer during the Second World War. She was one of the hell ships, used to transport prisoners of war. Shinyo Maru was sunk 7 September 1944 near Liley, Sindangan, Province, Mindanao Philippines by the USS Paddle, SS 263. There were approximately 750 American prisoners of war aboard. Some Japanese guards shot prisoners as they struggled from the holds or were in the water; 688 died when the ship sank, leaving only 82 survivors.
