Son of William P. Nordell who resided in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania.

John served as a Torpedoman's Mate Second Class, U.S.S. Allen M. Sumner (DD-692), U.S. Navy during World War II.

He resided in Philadelphia County, Pennsylvania prior to the war.

He enlisted in the Navy on March 9, 1943 in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania.

U.S.S. Allen M. Sumner was in the Lingayen Gulf to support minesweeping operations. At about noon they came under attack by Japanese kamikazes. One of the kamikazes crashed into the Sumner near the after stack and after torpedo mount.

The Sumner lost 14 men Killed or Missing In Action and 19 injured of which two later died of their wounds.

John was one of the 14 crewman "Killed In Action" in this attack during the war.

He was awarded the Purple Heart.

John was buried at sea.
