Richard served as a Torpedoman's Mate Third Class, U.S.S. Allen M. Sumner (DD-692), U.S. Navy during World War II.

He resided in Ohio prior to the war.

He enlisted in the Navy on March 16, 1943 in Cleveland, Ohio.

U.S.S. Allen M. Sumner was in the Lingayen Gulf to support minesweeping operations. At about noon they came under attack by Japanese kamikazes. One of the kamikazes crashed into the Sumner near the after stack and after torpedo mount.

The Sumner lost 14 men Killed or Missing In Action and 19 injured of which two later died of their wounds.

Richard was one of the 14 crewman "Killed In Action" in this attack during the war.

He was awarded the Purple Heart.

Richard was buried at sea.
