Conrad served as a Staff Sergeant on B-24D #41-23766, 400th Bomber Squadron, 90th Bomber Group, Heavy, U.S. Army Air Force during World War II.
He resided in Jasper County, Iowa prior to the war.
He enlisted in the Army Air Corps on November 10, 1941, prior to the war, at Fort Des Moines, Iowa. He was noted, at the time of his enlistment, as being employed as a mechanic and also as Single, without dependents.
Conrad was declared "Missing In Action" when his B-24, after taking off from 5 Mile Drome (Wards Drome) near Port Moresby on a single bomber armed reconnaissance mission, did not return to Wards Drome during the war. The plane radioed their ETA and requested the field lights to be turned on but were never seen or heard from again.
It is now known that they crashed into the side of a hill known as Walnut Mountain between Mumeng and Tsili Tsili. They entire crew was lost on this mission.
Conrad was awarded the "Silver Star" and the Purple Heart.
