1930 United States Federal Census (08 April 1930): Louisville (Ward 2), Jefferson County, Kentucky (sheet 21A, family 268, 1009 Dixon Avenue) – Joseph Sermersheim (9 Kentucky).

1940 United States Federal Census (12 April 1940): Louisville (Ward 4), Jefferson County, Kentucky (sheet 7A, household 142, 1709 Preston Street) – Joseph Sermersheim, Jr (19 Kentucky, printer). He had completed 1 year of high school.

Joseph J. Sermersheim (1921 Kentucky), a resident of Jefferson County, Kentucky, enlisted as a Private (S/N 15048508) in the U.S. Army on 19 December 1941 at Fort Knox, Kentucky. He was single, had completed 1 year of high school and had been working in printing and publishing.

Private Sermersheim was assigned to the 809th Chemical Company, Aviation, U.S. Army Air Corps and sent overseas.

March 1945
Corporal Joseph J. Sermersheim was a passenger on a Curtiss C-46D-5-CU Commando (C-46D #44-77360) with the 70th Squadron, 433rd Troop Carrier Group, U.S. Army Air Force. The C-46D #44-77360 took off at about 1630, 15 March 1945, with a crew of 4 and 21 passengers, on a ferrying mission from Elmore Field, Mindoro, Philippine Islands to Tarauan, Leyte, Philippine Islands. On approach in poor weather conditions, the plane crashed into a mountain located 6 kms (3.75 miles) northwest of San Roque, south of Tanauan, Leyte, Philippine Islands. The entire crew and all the passengers (a number of them medical passengers) were killed. Source: Missing Air Crew Reports (MACR) # 15996.

He was first buried in 7740 USAF Cemetery, Leyte #1, Palo, Leyte, Philippines Islands – Grave 198 (D-D 7151). After the war (autumn of 1947) his remains (along with 8,568 other American soldiers) were disinterred and brought to the American Graves Registration Service Manila Mausoleum. From there, according to the wishes of his next of kin (father, Mr. Joseph A. Sermersheim), Corporal Joseph J. Sermersheim was buried in his final resting place in the 7701 Ft. McKinley Cemetery (now known as the Manila American Cemetery) – Plot D, Row 16, Grave 142.

Fifteen Kentuckians, including three Louisvillians, have been killed in action... the War Department announced yesterday. Louisville Army Dead ... Pacific Area. SERMERSHEIM, Cpl. Joseph J., 24, son of Mr. and Mrs. Joseph A. Sermersheim, 1709 S. Preston, was killed in action on Leyte March 15. Sermersheim attended Halleck Hall and was employed by the George G. Getter Company before entering the service in December, 1941. He had been overseas three years with a chemical warfare unit. Memorial Mass will be said at 9 a.m. Tuesday, May 8, at St. Elizabeth's Church. Also surviving, five brothers and a sister.
