U.S.S. Allen M. Sumner was in the Lingayen Gulf to support minesweeping operations. At about noon they came under attack by Japanese kamikazes. One of the kamikazes crashed into the Sumner near the after stack and after torpedo mount.
The Sumner lost 14 men Killed or Missing In Action and 19 injured of which two later died of their wounds.
Lem was one of the 14 crewman who was declared "Missing In Action" in this attack during the war.
He was awarded the Purple Heart.
