He resided in Steuben County, New York prior to the war.

He enlisted in the Army on August 4, 1942 in Rochester, New York. He was noted, at the time of his enlistment, as being employed as a Retail manager and also as Single, without dependents.

He was married to Ethel France Nipher after his enlistment.

Carlton died in the "Line Of Duty" when the C-47A "Sure Skin" (#42-23860), on which he was a passenger, apparently caught fire and exploded for an unknown reason and crashed in the San Pedro Bay close to Leyte during bad weather.

This crash occurred 4 days after World War II had ended.

The entire crew of 4 and all 26 passengers perished on this flight.
