Frederick A. Martus, the eldest son of Frederick and Anna Anson Martus, was born in New York City as were his parents. He grew up in New Rochelle, New York, with his brothers Charles and Kenneth. After a year of college, Frederick enlisted on 4 November 1941 as a cadet in the Army Air Corps.

He served as a first lieutenant with the 394th Bomber Squadron, 5th Bombardment Group, Heavy, in the Pacific Theater. Lt. Martus is listed on the "Service Personnel Not Recovered Following WWII" record of the Department of Defense with the Date of Loss given as December 14, 1945. Lt. Martus was declared "Missing in Action" near the Solomon Islands on September 28, 1943 (RSP). The military officially declared the crew as dead on December 14, 1945. 1st Lt. Martus was awarded the Air Medal and the Purple Heart. He is memorialized on the Tablets of the Missing at Fort William McKinley, Manila, the Philippines.
