Thomas served as a Technical Sergeant & Engineer on B-17E "Texas #6" #41-9207, 64th Bomber Squadron, 43rd Bomber Group, U.S. Army Air Force during World War II.
He resided in New York prior to the war.
Thomas was declared "Missing In Action" when his B-17E, while on a mission, was attacked by Japanese zeros and crashed in East New Britain, Papua New Guinea during the war.
Thomas' true fate is currently unknown. Some information on him was reported by the only survivor of the crash, S/Sgt Paul J. Cascio. Thomas was known to have survived the crash however he was badly burned. The Japanese reported he was sent to a hospital where he died. However there is some indication that he was "executed".
His remains were not recovered.
He was awarded the "Distinguished Flying Cross", Air Medal, and the Purple Heart.
