United States Supreme Court Justice. Born in New Hanover County, North Carolina, he studied law in Boston and was admitted to the bar in 1775, at the age of twenty. During the Revolutionary War, he served as a Captain in a Continental regiment. After the war, he returned to North Carolina, was elected to the North Carolina State Legislature and was appointed Attorney General of North Carolina, in 1782. In 1789, President John Adams appointed Moore to a commission to negotiate a treaty with the Cherokee Indians. He resigned in 1790, to become a Judge of the North Carolina Superior Court. On December 10, 1799, President John Adams nominated Moore to the Supreme Court of the United States and he served three years until he resigned on January 26, 1804. He died at age 55 in Brunswick, North Carolina.
