Captain Edward Hugh Bagot Stack, 2nd Batalion, 8th Gurkha Rifles. He was the son of Edward Stack, Bengal Civil Service, and Marion Rosalie Stack (later Luttman-Johnson of Redhill House, Petworth, Sussex). He was baptised on 15 Oct 1885 in Shillong, Bengal (now Meghalaya), India. Educated at Temple Grove School, East Sheen, Surrey and Winchester College, Winchester, Hampshire. Gentleman Cadet at the Royal Military College, Sandhurst. Commissioned into the Indian Army (unattached list) as a 2nd Lieutenant on 5 Aug 1905. Served with the King's Royal Rifle Corps for a year and joined the 8th Gurkha Rifles on 17 Nov 1906. Promoted to Lieutenant on 5 Nov 1907 and to Captain on 5 Aug 1914. In Mar 1912 he married Mary Meta Stack, daughter of Theodore Stack of Dublin. At the outbreak of WW1 he was appointed to the Staff and served for some time at Marseilles, overseeing the disembarkation of troops from India. As soon as his own unit, 2nd Battalion, 8th Gurkha Rifles arrived at Marseilles on 12 Oct 1914, as part of 21 (Bareilly) Indian Infantry Brigade of the Meerut Division, he joined it and accompanied it to the front. On 30 Oct 1914 during the Battle of La Bassée he was wounded in the face and arm near Festubert, France but continued to fight all day. When the Germans rushed them he was shot in the chest and killed as he was firing his revolver. His body was never recovered. He is commemorated on the Neuve-Chapelle Memorial, France.
