B-17G #43-38480 then crashed near Wahnbeckerheide, southeast of Bielefeld, Germany. Two crew members survived the crash.
John was "Killed In Action" in this crash during the war.
He was awarded the Purple Heart.
At his mother's request, since she resided in Florida, the state of "Florida" was added to his headstone instead of John's state of residence "Maryland" as was normally done.
