On October 7, 1944 he was on the crew of the B-17G #43-38151 during a mission to bomb the airfield at Zwickau, Germany. His group encountered intense and accurate flak and the tip of their left wing was blown off, starting a fire. Their aircraft went straight down in a slow spin and exploded at about 8,000 feet. Eight of the men onboard were killed
