Earl served as a First Lieutenant & Bombardier on B-24J #42-50909, 763rd Bomber Squadron, 460th Bomber Group, U.S. Army Air Force during World War II.

He resided in Vanderburg County, Indiana and was a member of the Indiana National Guard prior to the war.

His National Guard unit was called into full time active Army service on January 17, 1941, prior to the war, from Evansville, Indiana. He was noted, at that time, as being employed as a Filling Station Attendant and also as Single, without dependents.

B-24J #42-50909 took off, with a crew of 10, from Spinazzola, Italy on a bombing mission over Ploesti, Romania. Near their target they were attacked by German Aircraft which hit the belly of the B-25 causing it to burst into flames and eventually crash in Romania during the war. Only two of the crew were able to bailout and survive.

Earl was "Killed In Action" in this crash during the war.

He was awarded the Air Medal with 3 Oak Leaf Clusters and the Purple Heart.
