While flying as the tail gunner on board a B-17 with the 708th Squadron of the 447th Bomb Group Heavy his plane was shot down by a fighter over Konigslutter, Germany while it was flying to bomb Berlin. Initially he was buried in Destedt Community Cemetery, 8 kilometers west of Konigslutter.
