PFC Winfield Liggett est né le 30 avril 1917 dans le comté de Spotsylvania, en Virginie, quatrième des neuf enfants de Samuel Coffman et Willie Thaxton (Dickenson) Liggett. Samuel était ingénieur civil. En 1940, Winfield travaillait comme ouvrier agricole.
Winfield a été rédigé en février 1942. Après une formation de base, Winfield a été envoyé en Angleterre et affecté à la K Company 116th Infantry. Il s'est entraîné avec l'unité pour l'assaut amphibie sur la plage "Omaha" et a participé à cet effort. Blessé le 8 juin 1944, il est envoyé à l'hôpital. Le PFC Liggett est revenu à l'unité de l'hôpital le 14 août 1944. Servant de carabinier automatique ou d'artilleur BAR, il a été tué au combat le 25 août 1944. Le
PFC Liggett est enterré au cimetière américain de Bretagne .
Le jeune frère, Samuel Coffman Liggett Jr. a servi de 1943 à 1946. Son arrière-grand-père, Jacob Nicholas Liggett, a servi en tant que 1er lieutenant dans la compagnie B 7th Virginia Cavalry pendant la guerre civile.
