Thurman came to NCSU in 1916 for a degree in Civil Engineering. He enlisted a few days after the US declared war and went to France in August of 1917.
He was killed in Issoudun, France after the end of the war. He died in an airplane accident while doing exhibition flying for General Pershing.

He is buried in the St. Mihiel American Cemetery in Thiaucort, France.


Thurman is one of the thirty four men honored by the NCSU Memorial BellTower.
