1st Lt George C Antonakos enlisted in Fort Bragg, NC on July 19, 1941. He was a co-pilot with the 15th US ARMY AIR FORCES , 719th Bomb Squadron, 449th Bomb Group, Heavy. He was KIA at Reidling, Austria when the aircraft was hit by flak and exploded.

1st Lt George Charles Antonakos, born in 1916, was the son of Charles and Poli Antonakos from Mecklenburg County, North Carolina. He left a wife, Constance at 118 Locust Ave., in Long beach, Ca.

The 1938 Charlotte City Directory lists him as a steam table employee at the Greenland Café in Charlotte. He is living at 204 N College Street. In the 1940 census 23 year-old George is living with his Aunt and 3 cousins at 510 1/2 E Trade Street in Charlotte, Mecklenburg County, NC. He is a restaurant manager. The 1940 Charlotte City Directory lists him as a cook at the Piedmont Grill.
George enlisted at Fort Bragg on 19 Jul 1941.

Lt Antonakos was co-pilot of B-24 42-95271 “Sleepy Time Gal 2” shot down by flak near Reidling, Austria on a mission to bomb an oil refinery at Moosbierbaum, Austria. The ship took a direct hit and broke in half at the rear bomb bay. The front half exploded (MACR 12072). Reidling is just south of the Danube River 31 miles west northwest of Vienna.
