Entered The Citadel with the Class of 1946; member of C Company, 1st Battalion, 337th Infantry, 85th Division.

Private First-Class Frank William "Barney" Cantillion, born 25 July 1922, was the only child of Frank and Margaret E (Mosely) Cantillion of Bridgeport, Fairfield County, Connecticut.

In the 1930 census 7-year-old Frank is living with his parents and maternal aunt Sadie F McCarthy at 136 Thorme street in Bridgeport. His father is an insurance agent.
In the 1940 census 17-year-old Frank is living with his parents and aunt Sadie at 345 Buena Vista Road in Bridgeport. His father is a claims adjuster for a life insurance company.

Frank graduated from Ludlowe High School in Fairfield in 1940. At the time of his draft registration in Oct 1940 Frank worked for the United States Aluminum Company in Fairfield. He entered The Citadel, Military College of South Carolina in Charleston with the Class of 1946.

Frank's father died 18 Aug 1941.

During the period from May 1 – May 5, 1944, the 337th Infantry Regiment was 47 mi NW of Naples in a sector of the 85th Division zone 4,300 yards (2.44 miles) in width, extending from the western edge of Minturno through Tufo to the Ausente River. All three battalions were on the line in order, from left to right, 1st, 2nd, and 3rd. Frank was in "C" Company so would have been in 1st Battalion, on the left flank closer to Minturno. The 2nd Battalion had three companies covering its front; the 1st and 3rd Battalions each had a two-company front, with one company in reserve behind the main line of resistance. The front line was lightly held during daylight hours but fully manned each night. Each night, ambush, reconnaissance, and combat patrols were sent out by the battalions.

The NARA WWII casualty listings for Connecticut show Cantillion, Frank W., Pfc from Fairfield County as killed in action 2 May 1945 so we can assume he was killed in the line between Minturno, Tufo and the Ausente River.

Frank's mother died 22 Feb 1945 so his Headstone Inscription and Interment record was sent to his aunt Sadie McCarthy in Bridgeport.
