Michael served as a Sergeant, 53rd Infantry Battalion, 4th Armored Division, U.S. Army during World War II.

He resided in Kings County, New York prior to the war.

He enlisted in the Army on May 16, 1941, prior to the war, in Jamaica, New York. He was noted, at the time of his enlistment, as being employed as a routemen and also as Single, without dependents.

Michael was declared "Missing In Action" in Germany during the war.

However it was unknown by the U.S. Military that he had actually been captured along with the rest of his recon. patrol in Moyenvic, France on October 3, 1944 by the Germany Army.

Michael was held at Stalag IIIB in Alt-Drewicz bei Kustrin, Brandenburg, Germany.

On January 31, 1945, German guards forced the prisoners out of the camp to keep them out of the hands of advancing Russian forces. Unfortunately, the column of POW's was marched right into a Russian armored unit, which opened fire on them. Sergeant Mazur was wounded in this incident and died of those wounds the next day. He was one of the Americans killed by this crossfire.

Michael was awarded the "Bronze Star", Purple Heart, and Prisoner Of War Medal.
