T/Sgt John R. Arter attended high school for four years and was a waiter.
He volunteered for the Army of the United States at Camp Blanding, Florida on 14 March 1942.
He was the top turret gunner on B-17 "Mr Five by Five," on a mission to bomb Bremen, Germany, He flew on 23 credited combat missions.
The airplane was last seen 10 kilometres west of Texel Island over the North Sea when it dropped out of formation with its wheels down. It appeared to be under control when last seen.
All ten crew members were killed. Only the body of the bombarbier, 1st Lt John W. Hull, washed ashore on Terschelling Island, The Netherlands on 13 February 1944.

Notes: Mr. Five by Five , piloted by Capt.Addell A.Cote , was last seen ten kilometers west of Texel Island over the North Sea when it dropped out of formation with its wheels down. It apparently was under control at 10,000 feet. No parachutes were observed. The aircraft crashed at Den Helder, Netherlands.

T/Sgt. Arters Body was not recovered.
There is a cenotaph memorial for him in Grandview Cemetery - Columbiana with a stone.
