William is the son of Hong Yung (born in California) and Chew Shee (born in China). He is the brother of Weyman, Florence, Lillian, and Wilson. He entered the service from Dos Palos, California, where he was working as a cook and waiter at his family's restaurant.

According to the 1930 census, the Yung family was living on Center Street in Township 7 (unincorporated Dos Palos) of Merced County, Ca. Dos Palos is 57 miles west northwest of Fresno. His father is managing a restaurant. His mother does not speak English.

According to the 1940 census, his mother is widowed and the family is still living in Dos Palos, Merced County. William is a cook and a waiter in the family owned restaurant.

He was killed in a mid-air collision. The mission for the day was the Vomag Tank Factory in the area of Plauen, Germany. 2LT Bill Young was Bombardier on B17 - 43-38876. Soon after take off, as the formation was assembling, the ship collided with B17 - 43-38402 from the 391st BS/34BG in heavy overcast. All 18 crewmember were lost as the planes crashed in the area of Fransden and Crettingham, England. Those killed included from B17 - 43-38876 - Pilot-Arlin Porter; Co-Pilot-Chas Daugherty; Nav-Melvin Downer; Bomb-Bill Young; FE/Top-Chas Elgin; Radio-Norman Shirk; Ball-Harry Yeaney; Waist-Joe Dawson;Tail-Hardin Lewis. From B17- 43-38402: Pilot-Hugh McCutcheso; Co-Pilot-Jim Holt; Nav-Julius Bowers; Bomb-Paul Sleetz; FE/Top-Tom Dalton; Radio-Bert Servo; Ball-John Lankin; Waist-howard Armstrong; and Tail-Erwin Meltz.

Lieutenant Young was the bombardier on B-17 #43-38876 piloted by Arlin L Porter. He was killed in action on 26 Mar 1945 when his ship collided with another plane during assembly over Framsden, Mid Suffolk District, Suffolk, UK. Framsden is 26 miles south southeast of Deopham.
