Staff Sergeant Franklin D Wheeler, Pennsylvania, Service Number 33360871, flew as a waist gunner on B-17 Flying Fortresses with the 339th Bomb Squadron, 96th Bomb Group. He was killed in action 26 Nov 1943 on the return from a mission to Bremen, Germany, in B-17 #42-30854, called 'Black Heart III", when heavy flak knocked at the left stabilizer causing the pilots to lose control of the bomber and crashing into the North Sea.
