Leo served as a Staff Sergeant & Ball Turret Gunner on B-17F "Black Heart III" #42-30854, 339th Bomber Squadron, 96th Bomber Group, Heavy, U.S. Army Air Forces during World War II.

He resided in Niagara County, New York prior to the war.

He enlisted in the Army on November 16, 1942 in Buffalo, New York. He was noted, at the time of his enlistment, as being employed in warehousing and also as Single, without dependents.

B-17F #42-30854, while on a bombing mission, was hit by German Flak which knocked off their left stabilizer causing them to crash into the North Sea.

Leo was declared "Missing In Action" in this attack and crash during the war.

He was awarded the Air Medal and the Purple Heart.
