Joseph was born to Major Joseph Ainsworth Sr and Olive Frances Fereira Glover. He attended St. Michael's School and graduated from St. John's High School. Joseph completed 2 years at Virginia Polytechnic Institute before entering the service in February 1943. He was stationed at Edgewood Arsenal, in Edgewood Maryland before going overseas. Joseph married Helen Hulcher Ford on November 7, 1942 in Ronoake, Virginia. Born to this union: one daughter Bonnie, who was only nine months old when her daddy was killed over Wales when his 351st bomber Group was being transported back to the United States.
Joseph served as a Captain, 509th Bomber Squadron, 351st Bomber Group, Heavy, U.S. Army Air Forces during World War II and flew on 32 missions, 7 more missions than was required by the Air Force during the war.
Joseph died in the "Line Of Duty" of a non-battle related incident during the war when the 351st Bomber Group was being transported back to the US.
He had previously been awarded a "Distinguished Flying Cross", "Air Medal with 4 Oak Leaf Clusters", and a "Purple Heart" in service to our Country.
