Louis served as a Coxswain, on the U.S.S. Leary (DD-158), U.S. Navy during World War II.

He resided in Baltimore, Maryland prior to the war.

The Leary, which was part of Task Group 21.41 that was escorting the U.S.S. Card (CVE-11), was struck by a G7es torpedo fired by German submarine U-275. The torpedo struck her starboard side and detonated in the after engine room, killing all of the men there and damaging both propeller shafts. They were then hit by two more torpedo's from the same submarine causing the Leary to sink.

98 crewmen were lost including her commander, CDR James E. Kyes.

Louis was declared "Missing In Action" in this sinking during the war.
