Lewis was a Second Lieutenant in the U.S. Army Air Forces 7th Bomber Squadron, 34th Bomber Group, Heavy. He was killed on D-Day-the commencement of the Liberation of North-West Europe.The Normandy landings, codenamed Operation Neptune, were the landing operations of the Allied invasion of Normandy, in Operation Overlord, during World War II. The landings commenced on Tuesday, 6 June 1944 (D-Day), beginning at 6:30 am British Double Summer Time (GMT+2).

Flew position 1-3 in 2nd Squadron.

Aircraft landed wheels up on the English coast. No airfields were in the area. Aircraft crashed and burned. Missing Air Crew Report reports location as Studland Battle Training Area, which is five miles southeast of Wareham. Crash-landed at Corfe Castle in the Olde Woode.
