James served as a Technical Sergeant & Top Turret Gunner on B-17F "Black Heart III" #42-30854, 339th Bomber Squadron, 96th Bomber Group, Heavy, U.S. Army Air Forces during World War II.

He resided in Philadelphia County, Pennsylvania prior to the war and he enlisted in the Army Air Corps on January 6, 1942 in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania. He was noted, at the time of his enlistment, as being employed as a Office Clerk and also as Single, without dependents.

B-17F #42-30854, while on a bombing mission, was hit by German Flak which knocked off their left stabilizer causing them to crash into the North Sea.

James was declared "Missing In Action" in this attack and crash during the war.

He was awarded the Air Medal and the Purple Heart.
