James was a Staff Sergeant in the U.S. Army Air Forces-544th Bomber Squadron, 384th Bomber Group, Heavy.

Service # 13067778

He entered the Service from Pennsylvania.

Missing in Action

Awards: Air Medal, Purple Heart. He was recommended for the Medal of Honor but he received a posthumous Distinguished Service Cross for the mission.


There were seven crew members of B-17 "Barrel House Bessie", #42-5051 which was ditched just off the English coast.
Staff Sergeant Bucher and Technical Sergeant Maurice V Henry were not recovered.

Staff Sergeant Albert Martin Schamber
was the only body recovered; he was initially buried at Brookwood (M-1-8) before being repatriated for burial at Fort Snelling National Cemetery, Minneapolis,Hennepin County.Minnesota, USA-Plot: SECTION C-25 SITE 14366.
There were four survivors:
There were four survivors all of whom returned to duty.
Major William F. Gilmore/Gilman, Pilot, was awarded the Silver Star for this mission;
Second Lieutenant Donald S. Morrison, Co-Pilot.
Second Lieutenant Earl C. Mason, Bombardier.
Technical Sergeant Nathan Streisfield, Radio Operator.
