Charles served as a Second Lieutenant & Bombardier on B-17F "Black Heart III" #42-30854, 339th Bomber Squadron, 96th Bomber Group, Heavy, U.S. Army Air Forces during World War II.

He resided in Gaston County, North Carolina prior to the war.

B-17F #42-30854, while on a bombing mission, was hit by German Flak which knocked off their left stabilizer causing them to crash into the North Sea.

Charles was declared "Missing In Action" in this attack and crash during the war.

He was awarded the Air Medal and the Purple Heart.
