HARWICH Barnstable Co.]—Phyllis (Squier) Alvord, 88, of Harwich, formerly of Worcester, died yesterday [June 11] in Cranberry Pointe Nursing Home, Dennis, after a long illness. Her husband, Charles C. Alvord, died in 1979. She leaves a stepson, James C. Alvord of Shrewsbury; a stepdaughter, Marjorie A. Farr of Athens, Texas; three grandchildren; two great-granddaughters; a nephew; and a grandnephew.
She was born in Worcester, daughter of Francis W. and Evelyn (Ward) Squier, and lived here until 1962. She then lived two years in England before moving to Harwich in 1964. She graduated from Classical High School, Worcester, and Worcester Normal School in 1924. Mrs. Alvord taught First and Second grades in Boylston. She also taught kindergarten in Worcester for 13 years. She was then a substitute teacher in the Worcester school system for 20 years, retiring in 1962. Mrs. Alvord was active for many years with the Camp Fire Girls in Worcester and Harwich. She was a former member of Adams Square Congregational Church in Worcester.
Graveside services will be at 1 p.m. tomorrow in Island Pond Cemetery, Harwich.... Doane, Beal & Ames Funeral Home, 160 West Main St., Hyannis, is directing arrangements.
