Son of Edward and Julia Phillips of 8 Elizabeth Street, North Richmond, Victoria. He enlisted in the Australian Imperial Force on 7 February 1916 and embarked from Melbourne for overseas with the 2nd Reinforcements of the 58th Battalion on 4 April 1916 per HMAT "Euripides" (A14). He transferred to the 60th Battalion on 25 May 1916. He was reported missing and later declared killed in action, aged 34 years.
